How many hours can I work as a student in Australia?

Posted20 September 2017 Study English in Australia Working Hours

If you wish to earn a little extra money or want to improve your CV while studying English in Australia, it is important to know what visa restrictions are in place for international students.

Working as a student in Australia

If you have a student visa you can work up to 40 hours over a two-week period. How these hours are split is up to you or your employer, for example you could work 10 hours in week 1 and then 30 hours in week 2, totalling 40 hours over two-weeks.

If however you work 30 hours per week twice over a two-week period, totalling 60 hours, you will be in breach of your visa restrictions. These restrictions are only applied during semesters, and are lifted during vacation periods such as Christmas or the summer break.

When can I start working?

You can only begin working after your course has started and you are fully enrolled.
